MEASURING LIGHT INTENSITY

  • Lumens measure luminous flux, is defined as one candela multiplied by one steradian. A steradian is a standard unit of measurement used to define a solid angle. If a light source emits one candela of luminous intensity uniformly across a solid angle of one steradian, the total luminous flux emitted into that angle is one lumen.
  • The lux is a unit of measurement of brightness, or more accurately, illuminance. The lux takes into account the area over which the luminous flux is spread and one lux is equal to one lumen per square meter.
  • Candlepower is a measure of luminous intensity when specifically measured in units of candelas, which is equal to one lumen per steradian. It doesn’t provide information about how strong the light is at a distance or how much light is perceived.

  • The two most important performance parameters of lights are beam control and beam angle, both of which are primarily functions of optical design rather than lamp type.
  • T.I.R optical design When light is incident upon a medium of lesser index of refraction, the ray is bent away from the normal, so the exit angle is greater than the incident angle, a phenomenon known as Total Internal Reflection (T.I.R.) occurs. This means that instead of exiting the optically denser material and being refracted, the incident ray is reflected inside the material. And the optical design contains T.I.R optics to enable the illumination pattern to meet the regulation.
  • Reflector optical design Reflectors can focus light over great distances. The depth of the reflector must be enough to capture the direct light emitted at angles greater than the desired beam angle, as measured off the centerline of the light emitter. And the reflectors for illumination also can meet the regulation.
